Race Talk

“Jay Smooth is host of New York’s longest running hip-hop radio show, the Underground Railroad on WBAI 99.5 FM in NY, and is an acclaimed commentator on politics and culture.

In this talk, he discusses the sometimes thorny territory of how we discuss issues of race and racism, offering insightful and humorous suggestions for expanding our perception of the subject.

At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)”

  1. A VERY WORTHWHILE VIEW & LISTEN. I AM FAMILIAR W/JAY SMOOTH’S WORK & I HAVE A GREAT RESPECT FOR HIS PERSPECTIVES. THANKS FOR THE SHARE! I PASSED ALONG ON MY FB PAGE BECAUSE I AM A GREAT PROMOTER OF RACE MATTERS &THEIR INTELLIGENT CONSIDERATION AND DISCUSSION! RACE ISSUES ARE OFTEN A DIFFICULT TOPIC TO DISCUSS W/O EMOTION, DEFENSIVE REASONING, & LOSS OF REASON. STILL WE MUST CONTINUE TO WRESTLE WITH THE ISSUES RATHER THAN TO DENY OR FLEE FROM THEM.

  2. Smooth has a smooth delivery. He does a great job presenting complex issues in an easily digestible form. I’m teaching “Survey of American Diversity” next semester. I may use this for my class.
